高校英語・基礎－関係副詞　why

[問] 次の英文の(　　)内に適当な前置詞を入れて、和訳してみましょう。

1. I was very tired. (　　) this reason, I didn't go out.
2. My father gave up drinking (　　) health reasons.

[答]

1. For ： 私はとても疲れていました。このような理由で[このような訳で][だから]外出しなかったんです。
2. for ： 私の父は健康上の理由でお酒をやめました。

ご覧のように、reason (理由) に付く前置詞は for です。
この reason を先行詞にして関係代名詞の英文を作ると、当然 for が残った英文になります。

1. I was very tired. This is the reason for which I didn't go out.
1. 私はとても疲れていました。これが私が外出しなかった理由です。
→ このような理由で[このような訳で][だから]外出しなかったんです。
2. Do you know the reason for which my father gave up drinking?
2. 君は私の父がお酒をやめた理由を知っていますか。

ちなみに、場所を表す場合と違い、前置詞を後に残す文はまれです。

This is the reason (which / that) I didn't go out for. (？)
Do you know the reason (which / that) my father gave up drinking for? (？)

この for which の代わりに、関係副詞 why を使うことができます。

1. I was very tired. This is the reason why I didn't go out.
1. 私はとても疲れていました。これが私が外出しなかった理由です。
→ このような理由で[このような訳で][だから]外出しなかったんです。
2. Do you know the reason why my father gave up drinking?
2. 君は私の父がお酒をやめた理由を知っていますか。

why = for which ですから、for が不要で便利ですね。

ちなみに、for which を実際に使うのはまれですから、説明・理解用にとどめておいてください。（暗記する必要なし）

疑問詞の場合も同じような考え方になります。

For what reason did you do it?
どのような理由でそのようなことをしたのですか。
Why did you do it?
なぜそのようなことをしたのですか。

もう少し 関係副詞の why を使った例文を追加しましょう。

3. There are two reasons why I don't like it.
4. Tell me the true reason why you were late.
5. The reason why I didn't go out is that I was very tired.
5. = The reason why I didn't go out is because I was very tired. (口語)

3. 私がそれを好きでない理由が2つあります。
4. 君が遅刻した本当の理由を言いなさい。
5. 私が外出しなかった理由は、とても疲れていたからです。

関係副詞の why は、that で代用することができます。

1. I was very tired. This is the reason that I didn't go out.
2. Do you know the reason that my father gave up drinking?
3. There are two reasons that I don't like it.
4. Tell me the true reason that you were late.
5. The reason that I didn't go out is that [because] I was very tired.

関係副詞の why と代用の that は省略することができます。

1. I was very tired. This is the reason I didn't go out.
2. Do you know the reason my father gave up drinking?
3. There are two reasons I don't like it.
4. Tell me the true reason you were late.
5. The reason I didn't go out is that [because] I was very tired.

先行詞が the reason の場合、省略して why だけにすることができます。
why に the reason が吸収されたと考えることもできます。

1. I was very tired. This is why I didn't go out.
2. Do you know why my father gave up drinking?
5. Why I didn't go out is that [because] I was very tired.

この場合、疑問詞の why を使った間接疑問文[疑問詞節]と混同しやすいですね。

6. a. Ask him why he was late.
6. b. Do you know why he was late?
6. c. He overslept. That's why he was late.

6. a. 彼になぜ遅刻したのかたずねなさい。（疑問詞）
6. b. 君はなぜ彼が遅刻したのか知っていますか。（疑問詞）
6. b. 君は彼が遅刻した理由を知っていますか。（関係副詞）
6. c. 彼は寝過したんです。それが彼が遅刻した理由です。（関係副詞）
6. c. → だから彼は遅刻したんです。

b. が、疑問詞か関係副詞かあいまいですね。
でも、どちらに解釈しても相手に伝わる情報は同じです。

関係代名詞の that や、同格[内容説明]の that と混同しないようにしましょう。

He didn't come for the reason (that) I don't know.彼は私が知らない理由で来ませんでした。

この場合、the reason は know の意味上の目的語ですから、目的格の関係代名詞です。

He didn't come for the reason (that) he was tired.
彼は疲れているという理由で来なかった。

この場合は、he was tired は the reason の内容ですから、同格[内容説明]の that です。

次の例文と比較すると、違いがよくわかります。

The reason (why / that) he didn't come is that[because] he was tired.
彼が来なかった理由は疲れていたからだ。

では最後に、暗唱例文を挙げますか、覚えてしまいましょう。

1. 私はとても疲れていました。これが私が外出しなかった理由です。
→ このような理由で[このような訳で][だから]外出しなかったんです。
2. 君は私の父がお酒をやめた理由を知っていますか。
3. 私がそれを好きでない理由が2つあります。
4. 君が遅刻した本当の理由を言いなさい。
5. 私が外出しなかった理由は、とても疲れていたからです。
6. a. 彼になぜ遅刻したのかたずねなさい。（疑問詞）
6. b. 君はなぜ彼が遅刻したのか知っていますか。（疑問詞）
6. b. 君は彼が遅刻した理由を知っていますか。（関係副詞）
6. c. 彼は寝過したんです。それが彼が遅刻した理由です。（関係副詞）
6. c. → だから彼は遅刻したんです。
