「前置詞付き関係代名詞その３」の一番最後に、先行詞が case の場合は、 in which の代わりに where も使うことができる、と解説したのを覚えていますか？

case (場合)、point (点)、situation [シチュエイション](状況・状態)、position (立場・地位)、などが先行詞に来る場合は、比喩的な場所を表す語句だと解釈して、where を使うことができます。

例文を挙げますから、覚えましょう。

1. There is a case where you mustn't do it.
1. where = in which
2. That's the point where you're wrong.
2. where = at which / on which
3. This is a situation where I can't do anything.
3. where = in which
4. I'm not in a position where I can help you.
4. where = in which

1. それをしてはいけない場合がある。
2. それ[そこ]が君が間違っている点だ。
3. これは私が何もすることができない状況だ。
4. 私はあなたを助けることができる立場[地位]でない。

先行詞が場所を表す典型的な語句、すなわち the place (場所・所) である場合、 the place を省略することができます。
言い換えれば、where の中に誰でも予測可能な先行詞の意味を吸収できるということです。

This is the place where we always play baseball.
これ[ここ]は私達がいつも野球をする場所です。

の the place を省略＝吸収して、

5. This is where we always play baseball.

ということができます。

the place だけでなく、上記の例文の 2. の the point もよく省略されます。
ただし、和訳が「点」から「ところ」に変わります。

6. That's where you're wrong.
6. そこが君が間違っているところです。

もう少し類例を追加しておきましょう。

先行詞なしの where だけですから、疑問詞の where とまぎらわしいですね。

where + S V → 1. どこで[へ][に]SがVするか (間接疑問文＝疑問詞節)
where + S V → 2. SがVする所[場所] (関係副詞の先行詞の種略)＝吸収

9. a. I asked him where he lived?
9. b. Tell me where he lives.
9. c. That's where he lives.

9. a. 私は彼にどこに住んでいるか訪ねた。（疑問詞）
9. b. 彼がどこに住んでいるか教えてください。（疑問詞）
9. b. 彼が住んでいる所を教えてください。（関係副詞)
9. c. あれ[あそこ]は彼が住んでいる所です。（関係副詞）

9. の b. が、疑問詞か関係副詞かあいまいですね。
でも、どちらに解釈しても相手に伝わる情報は同じです。
