whether の用法 その１ (副詞節)　を復習して来る。

前回は副詞節としての whether の用法でした。
今回は名詞節としての whether の用法です。

前回、名詞節とはどういうものなのか簡単に説明しました。
もう一度復習しましょう。

名詞節 → 節(＝主語と動詞を備えた文)が名詞の働きをしているもの。言わば「大きな名詞」

whether … or (whether) ～ ： …するか～するか (名詞節)

whether … or not ： …するかしないか → …するかどうか (名詞節)

まずはそれぞれ１例を挙げます。

1. We don't know whether we should go or whether we should stay.
　　　　　　動詞　　　　　　　　目的語（名詞節）
1. 私達は行くべきかとどまるべきかわからない。

whether we should go or whether we should stay (行くべきかとどまるべきか) が大きな名詞になっていて know の目的語になっていますね。

whether we should は２回繰り返すとくどいので省略して、

1. We don't know whether we should go or stay. (○)

とするほうが普通の英語です。
皆さんはこちらのほうの英語を使うようにしてください。

選択肢が一つしかない場合は or ～ の ～ を not に換え、 whether … or not にします。

2. We don't know whether we should go or not.
2. 私達は行くべきか行くべきでないか[→ 行くべきかどうか]わからない。

whether … or not の … の部分が長い場合は倒置して whether or not … でも構いません。

2, We don't know whether or not we should go.

さらに or not も省略して、

2. We don't know whether we should go.

としても構いません。

覚えやすいように整理しましょう。

1. 私達は行きべきかとどまるべきかわからない。
2. 私達は行くべきかどうかわからない。

1. We don't know whether we should go or (whether we should) stay.
2. We don't know whether we should go (or not).
2. = We don't know whether (or not) we should go.

名詞節としての whether は、動詞の目的語として使われる場合が一番多いですが、それ以外に、主語・主格補語・前置詞の目的語としても使われます。

名詞節としての whether節 は一種の間接疑問文ですから、次のページを必ず復習して来てください。

復習して理解できましたか。
1. 2. も含めて例文を挙げますから全部覚えてください。
たくさんあるように見えても同じような例文ばかりです。
whether節の「文中での位置＝働き」に注意して覚えましょう。

1. We don't know whether we should go or (whether we should) stay. (動詞の目的語)
2. We don't know whether we should go (or not). (動詞の目的語)
2. = We don't know whether (or not) we should go.
3. Whether the rumor is true (or not) is doubtful. (主語)
3. = Whether (or not) the rumor is true is doubtful.
4. It is doubtful whether the rumor is true (or not). (仮主語＋真主語)
4. = It is doubtful whether (or not) the rumor is true.
5. The question is whether we should go or (whether we should) stay. (主格補語)
6. I think it doubtful whether the rumor is true (or not). (仮目的語＋真目的語)
6. = I think it doubtful whether (or not) the rumor is true.
8. = I think (that) it is doubtful whether the rumor is true (or not). (仮主語＋真主語で)
8. = I think (that) it is doubtful whether (or not) the rumor is true.
7. I'm interested in whether Ken will come (or not). (前置詞の目的語)
7. = I'm interested in whether (or not) Ken will come.
8. We have the question (of) whether we should go or (whether we should) stay. (同格の前置詞 of の目的語で、省略可能)
9. I'm not sure (of/about) whether Ken will come (or not). (形容詞の後の前置詞の目的語で、ほぼ常に省略)
9. = I'm not sure (of/about) whether (or not) Ken will come.

1. 私達は行くべきかとどまるべきかわからない。
2. 私達は行くべきか行くべきでないか[→ 行くべきかどうか]わからない。
3. そのうわさが本当かどうかは疑わしい。
4. そのうわさが本当かどうかは疑わしい。(仮主語で)
5. 問題は私達が行きべきかとどまるべきかだ。
6. 私はそのうわさが本当かどうかは疑わしいと思う。(仮目的語で、又は仮主語で)
7. 私はケンが来るかどうかに興味がある。
8. 私達は行くべきかとどまるべきかという問題を抱えている。
9. 彼が来るかどうかよくわからない[← 確信がない]。

上記の例文のうち、 2. の「動詞の目的語」、9. の「形容詞の後の前置詞の目的語で前置詞が常に省略」の場合は、
口語英語では、whether … (or not) の代わりに if … (or not) がよく使われます。
if の場合、 or not はたいてい省略されます。
whether or not … と違って、 if or not … は使われません。

2. We don't know if we should go (or not).
2. 私達は行くべきかどうかわからない。
9. I'm not sure if Ken will come (or not).
9. 私はケンが来るかどうかよくわからない[← 確信がない]。

上記の例文にプラスして if の例文も覚えておきましょう。
会話では本当によく使われています。

《質問》

1. の「動詞の目的語」の場合は、 if で代用できないのですか？

《答え》

一応、if も可能なようです。

ですが、選択肢が二つ以上ある場合は whether のほうが好まれます。
（参考ページ ２ の上から４つ目の説明にもそう書いてあります）

We don't know whether we should go or (whether we should) stay. (○)
We don't know if we should go or (if we should) stay. (△)

学校英語では if … or (if) ～ は使わない方が無難でしょう。


whether は すぐ後に不定詞を従える whether to V という用法もあります。
