A: A lot of important discoveries have been made by accident.
たくさんの重要な発見が偶然行われてきました。
B: What do you mean?
どういう意味ですか？
A: Take America, for instance. Columbus discovered it by accident.
take ～ for instance = take ～ for example ： 例えば～を例に取ってみよう
例えばアメリカを例に取ってみましょう。コロンブスは偶然アメリカを発見しました。
B: He did?
He did? = Did he? ： そうなんですか。（相づち）
そうだったんですか？
A: Sure. He was searching for a shortcut to India.
はい。彼はインドへの近道を探していました。
B: Is that why the original inhabitants of America were called Indians?
Is that (the reason) why S＋V ： それがSがVする理由ですか。
それがアメリカの元々の住人がインド人と呼ばれる理由ですか？
A. Sure. It's a tribute to Columbus' great mistake.
そうです。
それはコロンブスの偉大な間違いの証です。
→ それはコロンブスの大きな間違いのおかげ[せい]なのですね。
Guide 2
A: Would you like to go fishing tomorrow?
明日釣りに行きませんか？
B: I'm afraid not. I'm going to be busy.
残念だけどやめておきます。
忙しくなりそうなので。
A: Why? Are you going some place?
go someplace = go somewhere ： どこかへ[に]行く (somewhere は副詞で to は不要)
どうしてですか？どこかに出かけるのですか？
B: No. But I've got to do my homework.
I've got to V = I have to V ： Vしなければいけない
いいえ。宿題をしなければいけないんです。
A: Well, if we get an early start, you could be back in time to do your homework.
could V ： Vできるだろう (can の仮定法過去形で現在・未来の遠回しな表現)
in time to V ： Vするのに間に合うように、Vするのに間に合って
もし早く出発すれば宿題をするのに間に合って帰って来れるでしょう[→ 来れると思います]。
B: Could we be back by noon?
お昼までには帰って来れるでしょうか？
A: Sure.
もちろん。
B: Then maybe I will go after all.
じゃあ、やっぱり行くことにします。
A: Fine. I'll pick you up at seven.
ＯＫ。7時に車で迎えに行きます。
