英語 (A xxx B) ： 和訳（B → A) の 和訳 (A → B) への移行 － その3 (A not to mention B)
お知らせ - 前回の記事（その2）を少し加筆訂正しました。
私が高校生時代に学習した not to mention ～ の意味と例文は次のようなものでした。
not to mention ～
= not to speak of ～
= to say nothing of ～
～は言うまでもなく
He can speak French, not to mention English.
彼は英語は言うまでもなくフランス語も話せる。
今でも大部分の受験参考書は同じような意味と例文を載せています。
ところが、前々回と前回に紹介した A(,) as well as B と同じように、 A, not to mention B にも、A と B の逆転現象が静々と進行しているようです。
ジーニアス英和辞典 第5版（最新版）で as well as を引いても相変わらず従来と同じ説明しか載せられていませんでしたが（ちょっとがっかりしました (-_-) )、 not to mention と to say nothing of に関しては、旧版の第4版でもうすでに次のように説明されています。
not to mention O 《略式》
…は言うまでもなく(さらに重要なことには)、…はさておき
[先行文を受けて] それに(加えて)、それにまた、さらに (to say nothing of)
《話し手の発言内容を強調し、Oには先行文の中心語と関係のある語句がくる》
She's a former judge, not to mention an attaractive blonde.
彼女は判事をしていたことがあり、それにまた魅力的な金髪の女性でもあるんだ。
to say nothing of O [肯定・否定文で]
…は言うまでもなく
[先行文を受けて] それに(加えて)、それにまた、さらに
《話し手の発言内容を強調し、Oには先行文の中心語と関係のある語句がくる》
《not to mention と異なり、通例「よくないこと」の用いられる》
The garden is a mess, to say nothing of the house.
家は言うまでもなく、庭もひどいものだった。
It was a complete waste of time, to say nothing of the expense.
それは完全な時間の浪費だった。さらにその費用も大きかった。
not to speak of O
…は言うまでもなく
She is fluent in three languages, not to speak of her mother language.
彼女は自分の母語はもちろんのこと、3か国語が流暢だ。
最新版の第5版を見ると、ほぼ同じ内容で、to say nothing of O の 「通例よくないことに用いられる」が削られているているだけでした。
ジーニアス英和の記述をまとめると大体次のようになります。
A, not to mention B
= A, to say nothing of B
1. Bは言うまでもなく、A（も）
2. A、それにまた[さらに] Bも
A, not to speak of B
Bは言うまでもなA（も）
あくまで、原意である 1, の意味を優先しています。
次に、海外の英英辞典の定義と例文をを見てみましょう。
Cambridge Dictionary Online (CDO) では、
not to mention (英語)
[定] used when you want to emphasize something that you are adding to a list:
[定] 一覧に加えようとしているものを強調したい時に使われる
[例] He's one of the kindest and most intelligent, not to mention handsome, men I know.
[例] 彼は私が知っている最も親切で最も頭が良くてさらにハンサムな男の人の一人だ。
not to mention (someone/something) (米語)
[定] and something else, even more than the first thing:
[定] そして、最初のものよりもさらに一層（程度が大きな）何か他のもの
[例] Bananas were scarce, not to mention mangoes.
[例] バナナが不足していた、そしてさらにマンゴーも不足していた。
to say nothing of …
[定] and in addition there is …
[定] そしてさらに…がある
[例] It would be an enormous amount of work, to say nothing of the cost.
[例] それはものすごい量の仕事になるだろう、そしてさらに費用もかかるだろう。
not to speak of 記述なし
Oxford Advanced Leaner's Dictionary Online (OALDO) では、
not to mention
[定] used to introduce extra information and emphasize what you are saying
[定] 追加の情報を提示し述べていることを強調するために使われる
[例] He has two big houses in this country, not to mention his villa in France.
[例] 彼はこの国に大きな家を2軒持っているだけでなくさらにフランスに別荘も持っている。
to say nothing of something
[定] used to introduce a further fact or thing in addition to those already mentioned
[定] 既に述べられたものに加えてさらに追加の事実や物事を提示するために使われる
[例] It was too expensive, to say nothing of the time it wasted.
[例] それはコストが高すぎたし時間も無駄だった。
not to speak of 記述なし
Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English Online (LDCEO) では、
not to mention something
[定] used to introduce an additional thing that makes a situation even more difficult, surprising, interesting etc
[定] 状況をさらにもっと困難、驚くべき、興味深い、等の状態にする追加の物事を提示するために使われる
[例] Pollution has a negative effect on the health of everyone living in the city, not to mention the damage to the environment.
[例] 汚染[公害]はその都市に住んでいる人全てに悪影響を及ぼしている、そしてさらに環境にも被害も与えている。
[例] It’s too far to walk, not to mention the fact that it’ll probably be closed by now anyway.
[例] 歩いて行くにはあまりにも遠すぎるし、それにどうせ今頃はおそらく閉まっているだろうしね。
to say nothing of something
[定] used to mention another thing involved in what you have just been talking about
[定] ずっと話していることに関連した別の事柄を述べるために使われる
[例] It wasn’t much for three years’ work, to say nothing of the money it had cost.
[例] それは3年間の労力の割には大したことはなかったし、またかかった費用の割にも大したことはなかった。
not to speak of 記述なし
まず第1に、海外の英英辞典には、 not to speak of は載せられていないようです。
したがって、そんなまれな表現は、皆さんは覚える必要がないように思えます。
第2に、ジーニアスで先に書かれていた「B は言うまでもなく、A（も）」 の定義がありませんね？
すべて、「A、それに加えて[さらに] B」 という定義ばかりです。
では、私見で (;'∀') まとめてみます、
A, not to mention B
= A, to say nothing of B
= A, not to speak of B (まれ)
1. A、それに加えて [さらに] B も
1. (B に重点があり、前から順送りに訳す)
2. B は言うまでもなく A も
2. (A に重点があり、後ろから訳す)
※ 2. 方が本来の意味だが、1. の方が圧倒的によく使われているようだ。
※ 1. と 2. のどちらに解釈するかは文脈による。
※ B は、基本的に名詞になる。
※ to say nothing of は、「よくないこと」に使われる傾向性が高いようだ。
※ not to speak of はまれな表現なので、覚えなくてもよい。
となります。
上記の例文を少し覚えやすいように改作して、暗誦例文も付けておきます。
1. I have a house in Tokyo, not to mention a villa in Karuizawa.
1. = I not only have a house in Tokyo, but also (have) a villa in Karuizawa.
1. villa [ヴィラ] ： (大)別荘、別邸
2. The restaurant is too far to walk (to), not to mention[to say nothing of] the fact that it's raining..
3. = The restaurant is too far to walk (to); and also it's raining.
3. walk to ～ ： ～まで歩いて行く
3. too ～ to V ： Vするには～すぎる、～すぎてVできない
3. It was a complete waste of time, not to mention[to say nothing of] the money it had cost.
2. complete [カムプリート] ： 完全な、全くの
2. waste [ウェイスト] ： 無駄、浪費
2. cost 金 [コスト] ： 金がかかる cost - cost - cost
4. He speaks three languages, not to mention his mother language.
・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・
1. 私は東京に家を1軒持ってるだけでなく、軽井沢に別荘も持っている。
2. そのレストランは歩いて行くには遠すぎる、それに雨も降っているしね。
3. それは全くの時間の無駄だったし、その上かかったお金も無駄だった。
2. かかったお金は言うまでもなく、それは全くの時間の無駄だった。（別解）
4. 彼は母語は言うまでもなく3か国語を話す。
3. は２重に解釈できてあいまいです。
発信用英語としては、not to mention のほうを使えばいいと思います。
