on Ving
Ｖすると(すぐに)
「Vするという行為に接触して」が本来の意味で、「Vした時に」「Vするとすぐに」「Vし次第」などと和訳できます。
接続詞を使って、as soon as S + V / when S + V と書き換えることができます。
Call me on arriving at the airport.
= Call me as soon as [when] you arrive at the airport.
空港に着いたら(すぐ)電話をください。
On hearing the news, she fainted.
= As soon as [When] she heard the news, she fainted.
faint [フェイント] ： 気絶する
その知らせを聞いて[聞くとすぐ]、彼女は気絶した。
「Vするという行為に接触して」が本来の意味ですから、on + 動作名詞 も同じ意味になります。
Call me on your arrival at the airport. [アライヴァル]
次の表現はよく使われる慣用表現ですから、覚えておくと便利です。
on (A's) arrival ： (Ａが)到着するとすぐ、到着次第
on receipt of ～ [レスィート] ： ～を受け取り次第
on reqrest [リクウェスト] ： 依頼[請求]があり次第[に応じて]
on demand [ディマンド] ： 要求があり次第[に応じて] → オンデマンドで
on call ： 呼べばすぐ(応じる)
on (A's) return ： (Aが)戻るとすぐ、Ａが戻り次第
では、例文を覚えてしまいましょう。
1. 空港に着いたら(すぐ)電話をください。
2. その知らせを聞いて[聞くとすぐ]、彼女は気絶した。
