whatever の用法
whatever の用法
すでに学習した whenever や wherever と同様、whatever も what の強調形です。
whatever は、文法の参考書や辞書では「(疑問)代名詞」「複合関係代名詞」ということになっています。
ここでは、「～詞」とい用語にとらわれないで、順を追ってわかりやすく説明していきます。

主な用法が３つあります。

(1) 疑問代名詞
whatever …
一体何を[が] …
※ what と ever が離れていることもあります。
1. Whatever [What ever] do you want? (want の目的語を問う文)
1. 一体何が欲しいのですか[何を望んでいるのですか]。
2. Whatever [What ever] happened? (主語を問う文)
2. 一体何が起こったのですか。
what の直後に on earth や in the world を置いても同じような意味になります。
1. = What on earth [in the world] do you want?
2. = What on earth [in the world] happened?
(2) 関係代名詞
まず最初に次のページを復習してください。（必ず）

関係代名詞の what の要点は次の２点でした。
what + S + V(他動詞) → SがVするもの[こと] (目的格)
what + V → Vするもの[こと] (主格)
what + S + V(他動詞) や what + V は文が大きな名詞になったもの＝名詞節
what (S) V は、名詞相当語句ですから、主語 / 補語 / 動詞の目的語 / 前置詞の目的語になることができます。
この関係代名詞の what を whatever にすると、意味が強調されて、
whatever + S + V(他動詞) → SがVするもの[こと]は何でも[全て] (目的格)
whatever + V → Vするもの[こと]は何でも[全て] (主格)
というように、「何でも[全て]」という意味が加わります。
関係代名詞の whatever の基本イメージ ⇒ 何でも
と覚えておきましょう。
例文をいくつか挙げます。
3. Do whatever you like.
3. 好きなことを何でもしなさい。
whatever は like の目的語。（目的格）
whatever … は、Do の目的語。
4. I'll accept whatever happens in the future.
4. 私は将来起こることは何でも受け入れます。
whatever は happens の主語。（主格）
whatever … は、accept の目的語。
5. Whatever I have is yours.
5. 私が持っているものは全てあなたのものです。
whatever は have の目的語。（目的格)
whatever … は主語。
6. Please tell me about whatever you want to do.
6. 何でも君がしたいことについて話して下さい。
whatever は do の目的語。（目的格）
whatever … は 前置詞 about の目的語。
7. The reward is whatever you want (it to be).
7. 褒美[ほうび]は何でも君が望むものだ[君の望むがままだ]。
whatever は want の目的語、又は be の補語。（目的格 / 補語格？）
whatever … は is の補語。
※ (it to be) がある場合、「褒美は何でも君が褒美がこうあって欲しいと望んでいるものだ」が直訳。
※ 3. から 7. まですべて ever が無くても英文は成立します。つまり ever がプラスされると「何でも / 全て」という意味がプラスされるだけです。
言い換え表現
anything や everything を使って、中学程度の簡単な英語で言い換えることができます。
whatever S + V = anything (that) S + V / everything (that) S + V
※ 目的格なので that は省略可能。
whatever V = anything that V / everything that V
※ 主格なので that は省略不可。
3. = Do anything (that) you like.
3. = 好きなことを何でもしなさい。
4. = I'll accept anything that happens in the future.
4. = 私は将来起こることは何でも受け入れます。
5. = Everything (that) I have is yours.
5. = 私が持っているものは全てあなたのものです。
6. = Please tell me about anything (that) you want to do.
6. = 何でも君がしたいことについて話して下さい。
7. =The reward is anything (that) you want (it to be).
7. = 褒美[ほうび]は何でも君が望むものだ[君の望むがままだ]。
(3) 譲歩節
whatever S + V や whatever V は、「(たとえ)Ｓが何をＶしようとも」「(たとえ)何がＶしようとも」という譲歩の意味を表すことがあります。
その場合は、2. の用法とは全く違い、副詞節[文が大きな副詞相当語句になったもの]になります。
つまり、もう一つ S + V の英文が必要です。
また、文語では、may が入っていることもあります。
まとめると、
Whatever S' + (may) V', S + V
= S + V whatever S' + (may) V'
(たとえ)Ｓ’が何をＶ’しようとも、ＳはＶする
Whatever (may) V', S + V
= S + V whatever (may) V'
(たとえ)何がＶ’しようとも、ＳはＶする
例文をいくつか挙げます。
08. Whatever you (may) do, try to do your best.
08. = Try to do your best whatever you (may) do.
08. (たとえ) 何をするにしても、ベスト[最善]を尽くすよう努力しなさい。
09. Whatever he says [may say], I won't trust him.
09. = I won't trust him whatever he says [may say].
09. (たとえ)彼がなんと言おうと、私は彼を信用しません。
10. Whatever happens [may happen], I'll go.
10. = I'll go whatever happens [may happen].
10. (たとえ)何が起ころうと、私は行きます。
11. Whatever the reason (is [may be]), you shouldn't do such a thing.
11. You shouldn't do such a thing whatever the reason (is [may be]).
11. (たとえ)理由が何であれ、そんなことはすべきではない。
※ 11. の whatever the reason is [may be] は、the reason is [may be] ～ (理由は～だ[かもしれない]) の ～ が whatever になっています。
※ 11. の is [may be] はよく省略されます。
言い換え表現
譲歩を表す場合、口語英語では、whatever の代わりに no matter what がよく使われます。
口語ですから、may はめったに使われません。
No matter what S' + V', S + V
= S + V no matter what S' + V'
(たとえ)Ｓ’が何をＶ’しようとも、ＳはＶする
No matter what V', S + V
= S + V no matter what V'
(たとえ)何がＶ’しようとも、ＳはＶする
※ no matter は「問題ではない」という意味が原義で、「Ｓ’が何をＶ’するかは問題ではない → (たとえ)Ｓ’が何をＶ’しようとも」「何がＶ’するかは問題ではない → (たとえ)何がＶ’しようとも」という意味になります。
08. = No matter what you do, try to do your best.
08. = Try to do your best no matter what you do.
08. (たとえ) 何をするにしても、ベスト[最善]を尽くすよう努力しなさい。
09. = No matter what he says, I won't trust him.
09. = I won't trust him no matter what he says.
09. (たとえ)彼がなんと言おうと、私は彼を信用しません。
10. = No matter what happens, I'll go.
10. = I'll go no matter what happens.
10. (たとえ)何が起ころうと、私は行きます。
11. = No matter what the reason (is), you shouldn't do such a thing.
11. = You shouldn't do such a thing no matter what the reason (is).
11. (たとえ)理由が何であれ、そんなことはすべきではない。
「え～ (-_-;) こんなにたくさん覚えるのー！」
という不満が聞こえてきそうですが、これでも最低量の例文ですから頑張って覚えましょう。

10. = I'll go no matter what happens.
11. Whatever the reason (is [may be]), you shouldn't do such a thing.
11. You shouldn't do such a thing whatever the reason (is [may be]).
11. = No matter what the reason (is), you shouldn't do such a thing.
11. = You shouldn't do such a thing no matter what the reason (is).
