Section 2. Application Dialogue
A: I'm sorry to be late for work today.
今日は仕事に遅れてごめんなさい。
B: That's all right. You're not late very often. I imagine you've got a good reason.
That's all right. = That's OK. ： 構いません。いいですよ。(謝るには及びません。)
've got = have got = have の口語表現
構いませんよ。
君はそんなにしょっちゅう遅刻するわけじゃありませんから[→ めったに遅刻しませんからね]。
何か立派な理由を持っていると想像します[→ ちゃんとした理由があるんでしょ]。
A: I don't know how good it is, but I missed my train and had to wait twenty minutes for the next one.
どれくらい立派かはわからないが、電車に乗り遅れて、次の電車を２０分待たなくてはいけなかったんです。
B: Oh, that's right. You live pretty far out in the countryside, don't you?
あ、そうだったね。
pretty far out ： (都会から)かなり遠く外に
君はかなり遠く離れた田舎[→かなりへんぴな田舎]に住んでいるのでしたね。
A: Yes. And if I miss the eight-o'clock train, I can't get here on time.
はい。それで８時の電車に乗り遅れると、時間通りにここに来れないんです。
B: What happened? Did you oversleep?
どうしたんですか？寝過ごしたのですか？
A: Yes. Some friends dropped in last night and stayed rather late.
drop in ： 訪ねる、遊びに行く[来る]
はい。友人が数人昨晩遊びに来てかなり遅くまで居たんです。
B: Well, don't worry about it. But don't you think it'd be more convenient to live in the city?
気にしなくていいですよ。
it'd[it would] be more convenient to V ： Ｖした方が便利だろう
でも、都会に住んだ方がもっと便利だと思わないのですか？
A: I don't know about that. You see, country life has a lot of advantages.
それはよくはわからないです。
You see, …. ： なんといっても[だって] … ですからね。
なんといっても、田舎生活はたくさん利点がありますからね。
B: You mean fresh air, peace and quiet, and all that?
新鮮な空気、平穏と静けさ、など、という意味ですか？
A: Yes. And besides it's a good place to raise a family.
(And) besides, = (And) in addition ： その上、それに(加えて)
はい。その上、子供を育てるのにはよい場所ですよ。
B: But what about commuting? Aren't you wasting a lot of time?
What about ～? = How about ～?
でも、通勤はどうなんですか。
時間をたくさん浪費してませんか。
A: Not really. You'd be surprised how many useful things you can do on the train. You can read and study, or just plan your day.
Not really. ： そうでもありません。
そうでもないです。
You'd be[You would be] surprised ： 驚くだろう
電車の中でどれほど多くの有益なことができるか(知ったら)驚きますよ。
読書も勉強も一日の計画も立てれます。
B: You've got a good point there. City life is usually so hurried you don't even have time to think.
so hurried (that) … ： とても忙しい[あわただしいので] …
なるほど君の言うことにも一理ありますね。
都会生活はたいていとても忙しい[あわただしい]ので考える時間もありませんからね。
A: Yes. You can't beat country life when it comes to free-and-easy living.
You can't beat ～ ： ～には勝てない → ～が一番いい
when it comes to ～ ： ～ということになると、～に関しては
はい。自由できままな暮らしということになると、田舎の生活には勝てません[が最高です]。
