A: I didn't know the Japanese winter got so cold.
日本の冬がこんなに寒くなるとは知りませんでした。
B: This year hasn't been very cold. You should have been here last year.
should have Vpp ： Ｖすべきだった(のに)、Ｖすればよかった(のに)
今年はそんなに寒くありませんよ。
あなたは去年ここにいるべきでした[→ あなたは去年ここにいればよかったのですが]。
A: You mean it was colder than this.
これより寒かったという意味ですか？
B: Quite a bit. And that's how I prefer it. This year has been a little too warm for winter sports.
quite a bit (cold)： かなり[相当](寒い)
※ Vocabulary Building の quite a bit of ～ の ～ は名詞だが、この場合は quite a bit ～ で ～ は形容詞か副詞。of は不要。
That's (the way) how I prefer it. ： それが私がそれを好む方法[様][状態]です。→ 私は冬はそんな風なのが[すごく寒いほうが]好きなんです。
相当寒かったです。
私は冬はそんな風なのが[すごく寒いほうが]好きなんです。
今年はウィンタースポーツには少し暖かすぎます。

how はこの場合は関係副詞だが、疑問詞に戻って意味を考えた方が、本来の意味を理解しやすいと思う。
How do you prefer winter?
君は冬はどのような状態のほうが好きですか。
↓
I prefer it cold.
私は冬は寒い方が好きです。
↓
Do you know how I prefer winter？
あなたは私が冬をどのような状態のほうが好きか知っていますか。
あなたは私が冬を好む状態を知っていますか。
↓
That's how I prefer winter.
それが[寒いのが]私が冬を好む状態です。
→ 私は冬はそんな風なのが[寒い方が]好きです。
A: Well, I'd rather have it warm. I really hate the cold weather.
I'd rather V = I would rather V = I would prefer to V ： Ｖするほうがいい、(むしろ)Ｖしたい
have it warm = have winter warm ： 冬を暖かい状態で持つ
私は冬を(寒い状態よりむしろ)暖かい状態で持ちたいです。
→ 私は(どちらかと言えば)冬は暖かいほうがいいです。
私は本当に寒い天気が嫌いなんです。
B: Winter is no problem for me. I just put on a lot of warm clothes.
put O on / put on O ： Ｏを身に付ける
just = only
冬は私には何の問題もありません。暖かい服をたくさん着ればすむことです。
A: Well, I hate winter and everything connected with it.
でも、私は冬と冬に関係したことはすべて嫌いです。
B: You mean you don't like winter sports?
ウィンタースポーツが好きではないという意味ですか？
A: Frankly, no. When winter comes, I feel like going into hibernation.
Frankly, no. = Frankly, I don't like them. ： 率直に言って、好きではありません。
feel like Ving ： Ｖしたい気がする、Ｖしたい気分である
go into hibernation ： 冬眠する
率直に言って、好きではありません。
冬が来ると冬眠したい気分になります。
B: Why don't you try going skiing sometime? If you're not doing anything next Saturday, we could go together.
Why don't you V? ： (相手を誘って) Ｖしませんか、Ｖしたらどうですか
try Ving ： Ｖすることを試す → (試しに)Ｖしてみる
[参] try to V ： Ｖしようと(努力)する、Ｖするよう努める
go skiing ： スキーに行く
sometime ： (未来の)ある時 → いつか
if you're not doing anything ： もし何もする予定がないのなら (未来を表す進行形)
could V ： Ｖできるだろう (can の仮定法過去形で遠回しな表現)
いつかスキーに行ってみたらどうですか。
もし今度の土曜日に何もする予定がないのなら、一緒に行けますよ[→ 行ってもいいですよ]。
A: No thanks. I prefer to sit in front of a big, warm fireplace.
prefer to V ： Ｖするほうを好む、Ｖするほうがいい
いいえ、結構です。
私は大きな暖かい暖炉の前に座っているほうがいいんです。
B: Maybe if you'd forget the cold and think of the fun you could have, you'd find winter more enjoyable.
If you'd V1, you'd V2 = If you would V1, you woud V2 ： もしＶ1する気があれば、Ｖ2するだろう
※ 前者の would は「意思」、後者の would は「推量]の意を表す will の仮定法過去形
think of ～ = think about ～ ： ～について[のことを]考える
could V = might V = may V ： Ｖするかもしれない
多分寒さを忘れて体験するかもしれない楽しみのことを考え(る気があ)れば、冬はもっと楽しいとわかるだろう[ →楽しいかもしれませんよ]。
A: I'm sure if I went skiing, I'd get a broken leg, or something.
I'm sure (that) … ： …を確信している → きっと…だ(と思う)
If S 仮定法過去形, S would 原形 ： もしＳがＶしたら、ＳはＶするだろう
get a broken leg ： 折れた脚を得る → 足を骨折する
or something ： か何か
もし私がスキーに行ったら、きっと足を骨折かなんかするでしょうね。
B: Don't be so pessimistic. Winter sports are great fun.
※ fun は名詞なので、a lot of fun / great fun / quite fun などを使う。very fun は不可。
そんなに悲観的なってはいけません。
ウィンタースポーツはとても楽しいですよ。
A: Maybe so. But I'll just go on shivering and hope for an early spring.
go on Ving ： Ｖし続ける
hope for ～ ： ～を願う
多分そうかもしれません。
でも、私はただ震え続けて早い春を願っています[春が早く来るのを願います]。
