1. (be) characteristic of ～ ： ～の特徴を示している
a. The virtues of honor and patience are characteristic of many Oriental people.
a. 名誉と忍耐という美徳は多くの東洋人の特徴である。
b. A strong Tokyo accent is characteristic of Jiro's speech.
b. 強い東京訛りが次郎のしゃべり方の特徴だ。
2. by oneself ： 一人で、単独で、自分たちだけで
a. Can you lift this rock by yourself?
a. 一人でこの岩を持ち上げることができますか？
b. I'll never be able to solve this problem by myself.
b. 私は一人でこの問題を解くことは絶対できないでしょう。
c. Mary doesn't like to travel by herself.
c. マリーは一人で旅行するのは好きでない。
d. The boys said they could raise the money by themselves.
d. その男の子たちは自分たちだけでそのお金を集めることができると言った。
3. advise 人 to V ： 人にＶするように忠告[アドバイス]する
a. Mr. Brown advised his son to study harder.
a. ブラウンさん(男)は息子にもっと一生懸命勉強するようにアドバイスした。
b. I advise you to get a job in Tokyo.
b. 私は君に東京で仕事に就くようアドバイスします。
→ 東京で仕事を見つけたほうがいいんじゃないですか。
c. What should I advise the pupils to read?
c. 生徒達に何を読むようにアドバイスすればいいだろうか？
d. We advised him not to ear sushi on such a hot day.
d. 私達は彼にそんな暑い日に寿司を食べないよう忠告した。
4. thanks to ～ ： ～のおかげで
a. Thanks to a scholarship Jiro was able to go to America.
a. 奨学金のおかげで次郎はアメリカに行くことができた。
b. Thanks to Jimmy we all missed the train.
b. ジミーのおかげで[→ せいで]私達は皆電車に乗り遅れた。
c. Thanks to the Internet news travels very fast today.
c. インターネットのおかげで、今日ニュースはとても速いスピードで伝わる。
5. give O up / give up O / give up Ving ： O[Ｖすること]をやめる、あきらめる
a. Mr. Brown tried to give up smoking.
a. ブラウンさん(男)はタバコをやめようと(努力)した。
b. I'm going to give up eating candy.
b. 私はキャンディーを食べるのをやめるつもりです。
c. Why don't you give up that foolish plan?
c. そんなばかな計画はやめたらどうですか？
d. You've almost finished. Don't give up now.
d. 君はもうほとんど終わっています[→ 後もう少しです]。今あきらめないで。
6. can stand O ： Oをがまんする ＝ can bear O
a. Don't make so much noise. I can't stand it.
a. そんなに大きな音を立てないでください[騒がないでください]。がまんできません。
b. John says he can't stand Mary.
b. ジョンはマリーががまんならないと言っています。
c. Mrs. Brown can't stand sushi.
c. ブラウンさん(既婚女性)は寿司ががまんできない。
d. How can you stand studying so hard?
d. どうしてそんなに一生懸命勉強するのに耐えれるのですか？
e. I can stand Jimmy only for about ten minutes.
e. 私は10分ほどしかジミーをがまんできない。
7. born ～ ： 生まれながらの～ ＝ natural ～
a. John is a born athlete.
a. ジョンは生まれながらのスポーツマンです。
b. Mary is a born singer.
b. マリーは生まれながらの歌手です。
8. be[become] discouraged ： がっかりさせられている[られる] → がっかりしている[する]
a. Don't become discouraged just because you failed the exam.
a. 単に試験に落ちたからといって[試験に落ちたという理由だけで]落胆してはいけません。
b. Mary looks very discouraged, doesn't she?
b. マリーはとてもがっかりしているように見えますね。
c. Why do I always get discouraged on rainy days?
c. なぜ私は雨の日はいつも気分が落ち込むのだろうか？
9. owe ～ to … ： ～(の恩恵を)を…に負っている → ～は…のおかげである
a. John owes his good looks to his father.
a. ジョンは幸運を父親に負っている → ジョンの幸運は父親のおかげだ。
b. I owe my success to my hard work and good luck.
b. 私の成功は勤勉と幸運のおかげだ。
c. Jimmy owes his ability to speak German to hard study.
c. ジミーのドイツ語を話す能力は勤勉のおかげだ。
10. change one's mind ： 考えを変える
a. Mother seems to change her mind about ten times a day.
a. 母は1日に10回ほど気が変わるようです。
b. I know I said I'd go, but I've changed my mind.
b. 行くと言ったのはわかっています、でも気が変わりました。
c. Did you change your mind about studying English?
c. 君は英語の勉強をすることに関して気が変わったのですか？
d. John promised he'd help me, and I'm sure he won't change his mind.
d. ジョンは私を手伝うと約束した、そしてきっと彼は心変わりしないと思う。
