Section 1. Presentation
Photography has long been one of the world's most popular hobbies, enjoyed by both young and old alike.
long [副] = for a long time
has long been ～ ： 長い間ずっと～である (現在完了の継続用法)
(both) ～ and … alike ： ～も…も同様に、～も…も両方とも
コンマはあるが、 hobbies を限定していると解釈すると、… hobbies which are enjoyed … だから、
→ 写真撮影は、ずっと長い間、若者にも年配の人にも楽しまれている世界で最も人気のある趣味の一つである。
… hobbies, (which is) enjoyed … と解釈すると、
→ 写真撮影は、ずっと長い間世界で最も人気のある趣味の一つで、若者にも年配の人にも楽しまれている。
多分、後者の解釈の方が妥当でしょう。
No matter where you go, you can see people busily pointing their cameras at everything in sight.
no matter where … ： (たとえ)どこに[で]…しようとも ⇒ 参考ページ
see O Ving ： ＯＶしているのを見る
point O at ～ ： ～にＯを向ける
(be) in sight ： 視界の中に(ある)、見えている
たとえどこへ行こうとも、人々が見えるもの全てに忙しくカメラを向けているを見ることができる。
Some people love to take pictures of nature and others like to take pictures of people, but tourists are especially big photography fans, both still photography and video.
a big photography fan ： 写真撮影が大好きな人、写真撮影愛好家
still ： [形] 静止した、動かない
still photography ： スチール写真撮影 → 要するに普通の静止した「写真撮影」
一部の人は自然の写真を撮るのが大好きで、また一部の人は人の写真を撮るのが好きであるが、
→ 自然の写真を撮るのが好きな人もいれば、また人の写真を撮るのが好きな人もいるが
観光客は特に写真を撮るのが好きである、写真、動画共に。
When they return home, they want to be able to show pictures and video of the places they visited to their friends.
彼らは家に戻ると、自分が訪れた場所の写真やビデオを友人に見せることができることを望む。
Most tourists are not professional photographers.
たいていの観光客はプロの写真家ではない。
So in their enthusiasm to get good and interesting pictures they sometimes make simple mistakes.
in one's enthusiam to Ｖ [インスージアム] ： Ｖしようとする熱心さのあまり
だから、よい面白い写真を撮ろうとする熱心さのあまり、時々単純なミスを犯す。
One tourist in Rome, for example, spent a lot of time taking videos of all the beautiful sights around the city.
spend 時間 Ving ： Ｖするのに時間を費やす、Ｖして時間を過ごす ⇒ 参考ページ
例えば、ローマのある観光客は、ローマじゅうの美しい景色をすべてビデオに撮るのに多くの時間を費やした。
At the end of the day, he began to put his camera back in its case.
一日の終わりに彼はカメラをケースの中に戻し始めた。
Then he noticed that he had recorded over the tape he used on his last vacation !
record over a tape ： 録画したビデオの上に重ね撮りをする
その時彼は前回の休暇旅行で使ったテープに重ね撮りしてしまったことに気がついた。
He forgot to change the video tape and so lost the video he took while in France the year before.
forget to V ： Ｖすることを忘れる、Ｖし忘れる
while in France = while he was in France
the year before = (in) the previous year ： 前年(に)、前の年(に)
彼はビデオテープを換えるのを忘れていた、それで前の年にフランスにいる間に撮ったビデオを失った。
He was a bit angry, but he never made that mistake again.
a bit = a little = a little bit ： ちょっと、少し
彼はちょっと腹が立ったが、二度とそのような間違いを犯すことはなかった。
This experience had taught him a good lesson.
この経験は彼によい教訓を教えたのだった。
