A: Why did you decide to sail around the world?
なぜ君は船で世界一周しようと決心したのですか？
B: Well, I thought it would be an exciting adventure, and a great learning experience as well.
～ as well ：～も(また)
[例] I like dogs, and (I like) cats as well. (私は犬が好きで、それに猫も好きです。)
そうですねえ、それがわくわくする冒険に、さらにすばらしい学習体験[人生経験]にもなるだろうと思ったからです。
A: But wouldn't you prefer traveling by a comfortable modern airplane?
prefer to V ≒ prefer Ving ： Vする方を好む
Wouldn't you prefer は Don't you prefer の婉曲表現。Won't you prefer とは言わない。
でも、快適な現代の飛行機で旅行する方がいいんじゃないのですか？
※ 普通、by を使う場合は、by airplane のように無冠詞か、by the 9:00 p.m. airplane のように時間が付いている場合は定冠詞[the]が付く。不定冠詞[a/an]の場合は、in an airplane とか on an airplane のほうが普通だと私は思うのですが・・・(?_?)
B: No. Traveling by yacht is a lot more fun.
a lot more fun ： (～のほうが)ずっと楽しい、はるかに楽しい [much fun の much を比較級の more にし、さらに比較級を強調する a lot = much を足したもの。much more fun や a good deal more fun も同意。]
いいえ。ヨットでの旅行のほうがずっと楽しいですよ。
A: But it must be pretty dangerous.
でも、それはかなり危険にちがいありません。
B: Not really. I was well prepared and did a lot of research.
そうでもありませんよ。
be well prepared ： 十分に準備をさせられる[させられている] → 十分準備をする[ができている]
do research ： 調査・研究をする
十分に準備を整えてたくさん調査しましたから。
A: What did you do for food?
食料はどうしたのですか？
B: I took a lot of canned and dehydrated foods along. Once in a while I managed to catch a fish.
take ～ along = take ～ (along) with me ： ～を(一緒に)持って行く
dehydrated ディーハイドレイト [参] hydro の語源 → 水、水素
once in a while ： たまに、時々
たくさんの缶詰と乾燥食品を持って行きました。時々なんとか魚も釣り上げました。
A: Well I prefer to stay home, where I can always have good meals. I hear it took you quite a while to cross the Atlantic.
私は家にいるほうがいいです、そこだと[家だと]いつでもおいしい食事をいただくことができますから。
大西洋を横断するのにかなりの時間がかかったと聞いています[→ かかったそうですね]。
B: Seventy-nine days. But the trip across the Pacific took even longer.
even 比較級 = still 比較級 ： さらに(ずっと)～
79日です。でも、太平洋横断(旅行)はさらにもっとかかりました。
A: I certainly admire your bravery. I'd like to travel around the world some day myself. But I'm afraid it's too expensive.
あなたの勇敢さには本当に感心します。
いつか私も世界一周旅行をしてみたいものです。
でも、残念ながらお金がかかりすぎると思います。
B: Well, next time I go around the world on my yacht, how about going along?
(the) next time S＋V ： 次に[今度]SがVする時(には) [接続詞相当語句]
on my yacht ： 私のヨットで [参] by yacht (無冠詞の場合は by)
go akong = go (along) with me
じゃ、今度私がヨットで世界一周する時には、一緒に来ませんか？
A: No, thanks. I've seen your yacht and it doesn't look very big.
いいえ、結構です。あなたのヨットを見たことがありますが、あまり大きそうには見えなかったので。
B: It took me around the world more than once. I think I can do it again.
more than once ： 一度より多く → 一度ならず、何度も
私のヨットは何度も私を世界一周に連れて行ってくれました。
もう一度できると思います。
A: Maybe so, but I prefer to save money and travel by plane.
多分そうかもしれませんが、私はお金を貯めて飛行機で旅行するほうがいいです。
