中学英語・ちょっと復習－How about ～? / What about ～? の用法


簡単には「～はどうでしょう？～はどうですか」と覚えておけばいいと思います。

でもこれで終わればシャレにならないのでもう少し詳しく解説しましょう。（中学レベル）

How about ～ ＝ What about ～

[意見を求めて] ～はどうですか、～ではどうでしょう、～のほうはどうなんですか

1. I'm looking for a sports car. / How about [What about] this red one?
2. I can't go today. / How about [What about] tomorrow, then?
3. Tomorrow is OK with me. How about [What about] you?
3. S is OK with 人 ： 人に関しては[の場合は]～は大丈夫だ

1. 私はスポーツカーを探しています。 / この赤い車なんかどうでしょう。
2. 僕は今日は行けません。 / じゃあ、明日はどうですか。
3. 私は明日は大丈夫です。君はどうですか。

[提案・勧誘] ～はどう[いかが]ですか

4. How about [What about] a drink?
5. How about [What about] a game of chess?

・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・

4. 一杯いかが[どう]ですか。
5. チェスを一番[一試合]どうですか。

～の部分を動名詞に入れ換えれば、もっと具体的に提案・勧誘できます。
主語がないので、提案・勧誘する相手は一人でも複数でも自由です。

How about Ving ＝ What about Ving
(提案・勧誘して) Vしてはどうしょうか、Vしたらどうですか

6. How about [What about] going for a drink after work?
7. How about [What about] going to the doctor?
8. How about [What about] coming with us?
9. How about [What about] playing video games together?

6. 仕事の後一杯飲みに行くのはどうでしょうか[行きませんか]。（自分も含めて相手・皆を勧誘）
7. お医者さんに行ったらどうですか。（相手に提案）
8. 私達と一緒に来てはどうでしょう[来ませんか]。（相手を勧誘）
9. 一緒にテレビゲームをするというのはどうしょうか[しませんか]。（自分も含めて相手・皆に提案）

この表現は、くだけた会話でよく使います。

主語のある疑問文で言い換えると次のようになります。

相手を誘って
Why don't you V? = Won't [Will] you V？
Vしませんか？

相手に提案して
Why don't you V? [Won't [Will] you V？は使えません]
Vしたらどうですか？

皆を誘って[皆に提案して]
Why don't we V? = Shall we V?
Vしてはどうでしょう？Vしませんか？
