Section 3. Notes on Conversational Style
1. You in conversation (and in writing) is frequently used in a general way to mean one, people, man, etc.
in a general way ： ＝generally 一般(的)に
会話(文章)中の you は one、people、man、などの意味で一般によく使われる。
a. Can you go by taxi? / Yes, you can.
a. タクシーで行けますか？ / はい、行けます。
(返事も you であることに注意！)
b. In the winter you can catch cold easily.
b. 冬は簡単に風邪をひく可能性がある
b. → 冬は風邪を引きやすい。
c. When you go to the zoo, you can see many unusual animals.
c. 動物園へ行くと、多くの珍しい動物を見ることができる。
[注] この you は「あなた」だけではなく「わたし」も「その他の人」も含めた「一般的な人々」という意味である。次の文の you は「あなた」だけを含めた「特定の地域の一般的な人々」なので、上記の例文の you とは違うので要注意！
d. What language do you speak in your country? / We speak English.
d. あなたの国では何語を話しますか？ / 英語を話します。
(返事に we を使っていることに注意！)
2. Ever and never in question and answers. Ever is used in questions and negative statements. Study the following examples of the use of ever and never.
疑問文と答えの中の ever と never。ever は疑問文と否定文で使われる。ever と never の次の用例を研究しなさい。
a. Have you ever been to London? / Yes. I've been there once.
a. あなたは今までにロンドンに行った事がありますか？ / はい。一度(そこに)行った事があります。
b. Have you ever seen an elephant? / Yes. I've seen many of them.
b. あなたは今までに象を見たことがありますか？ / はい。たくさん見たことがあります。
c. Have you ever eaten sushi? / No. I've never eaten sushi.
c. あなたは今までに寿司を食べたことがありますか？ / いいえ、一度も食べたことがありません。
d. I don't ever want to go to there again.
d. 私は二度とそこに行きたくありません。
3. I'll bet means I'm sure or I think so, too. It is frequently used in conversation.
I'll bet は I'm sure や I think so, too. を意味する。それは会話の中でよく使われる。
I'll bet ･･･ ： きっと･･･だろう[だと思う]
I'll bet ： (返事・相づちに使って) その通り。きっとそうでしょうね。
a. I'll bet it'll rain tomorrow.
a. きっと明日は雨が降るでしょう。
b. I'll bet Jimmy will fail the exam.
b. きっとジミーは試験に落ちると思う。
c. Minnesota is really beautiful. / I'll bet.
c. ミネソタ州は本当に美しい。 / その通りです。
4. Good for her [you, him, them, etc] is often used for expressing approval, admiration, or the like.
or the like ： など
Good for her [you, him, them, etc] は、賛成、賞賛、などを表すためによく使われる。
(行為をほめて)(君は、彼は、彼らは)よくやった。おめでとう。それはいい。それは立派だ。
a. Jimmy passed the examination. / Good for him ! I knew he could do it.
a. ジミーは試験に合格しました。 / おめでとう。彼は合格できると分かっていました。
b: I'm going to send a box of candy to my teacher. / Good for you. That will make her very happy.
b. 先生にキャンディーを一箱送るつもりです。 / それはいい。それは彼女をとても喜ばせるでしょう[→ そうすれば彼女はとても喜ぶでしょう]。
5. Not at all means certainly not. It is a frequent answer to questions containing would you mind, do you care, and the like.
and the like ： など
Not at all は certainly not を意味する。この表現は would you mind、do you care、などを含む疑問文に対してよく使われる答えである。
いいえちっとも。いいえ全然
a. Do you mind lending me your book? / Not at all. Go right ahead.
a. 私にあなたの本を貸すのはいやでしょうか[→ 私にあなたの本を貸してもらえないでしょうか]？
a. いいえちっとも(いやじゃありません)[→ はい、いいですよ]。 どうぞ(持って行ってください)。
b. Would you mind taking care of the baby? / Not at all.
b. 赤ちゃんの世話をするのはおいやでしょうか[→ 世話をしていただけませんか]？
b. いいえ全然(いやじゃありません)[→ はい、かまいません]。
