Section 2. Application Dialogue
A: Today everything seems to be getting faster and faster.
今日、全てものがだんだん速くなってきているように思えます。
B: You're right. Just this morning three of those new jet planes went zooming over my house.
君の言うとおりです。
つい今朝も、いつもの新しいジェット機が３機私の家の上空を轟音を立てて飛んでいきました。
A: They're terrific, aren't they? Just think, we'll be able to travel to the stars in a few more years.
ジェット機はすばらしいですね。
ちょっと考えてみてください、あと数年したら(他の)星へ旅行できるようになるでしょうね。
B: Well. I'd be happy if they'd put jets or something on the Tokyo trains. It takes me over an hour to get to work.
if Ｓ would V ： ＳがVしてくれたら(would は「意思 → 依頼」を表す)
[例] I'd be glad if you'd help me. (手伝ってくれたら嬉しいんだけど)
get to work ： 職場に達する → 仕事に行く
東京の電車にジェットエンジンか何かつけてくれたらうれしいんですけどね。
仕事に行くのに私は１時間以上かかるので。
A: I don't know about jets. But actually, the Tokyo transportation system isn't too bad.
ジェットエンジンのことはよくわからない。
でも、実は東京の交通システムはそんなに悪くありませんよ。
B: I know. According to some people, it's the best in the world. But during rush hours it's terribly overcrowded.
わかっています。一部の人によれば、東京のシステムは世界で一番優秀だそうです。
でも、ラッシュアワーの間はひどく込んでいます。
A: Yes. Especially the trains. You almost have to fight to get on them.
はい。特に電車はそうです。
電車に乗るためにはほとんど戦わなければいけません。
→ 電車に乗るのはもうほとんど戦いです。
B: Do you take the train to work?
電車に乗って仕事に行っているのですか？
A: Now I do. But next month the new subway will be finished. That will get me to work in about half the time it takes now.
今はそうです。
でも来月は新しい地下鉄が完成します。
その地下鉄は今かかっている時間の約半分で私を職場へ連れて行ってくれます。
→ それに乗れば今の半分の時間で仕事に行けます。
B: Say, that's right. I can take that subway, too. It'll put an end to my transportation worries.
Say, that’s right ＝ Oh, yes. ： ああ、そうだったね。
put an end to ～ ： ～を終わらせる ～をおしまいにする
ああ、そうでしたね。
私もその地下鉄に乗れます。
その地下鉄は私の交通の心配を終わらせてくれるでしょう。
→ その地下鉄のおかげで私の通勤の悩みも無事解決しそうです。
A: Well, here comes my train. I'll see you tomorrow.
Here comes ～ ： (ほら)～が来るよ[来たよ]
ほら、私の乗る電車が来ました。じゃ、また明日会いましょう。
B: All right. See you tomorrow.
わかりました。ではまた明日。
