Section 7. Conversation Guide


Guide 1

A: Almost everyone seems to be working on the school newspaper. How about you?

work on ~ : ~の製作に従事する ~に取り組む
ほとんど全員が学校新聞の製作に従事している[関わっている]ようですね。
あなたはどうですか → あなたもですか。

B: Sure. I'm working as a reporter.

もちろんです。記者として働いています[→ 記者をしています]。

A: Is it interesting?

面白いですか?

B: Not very. I spend most of my time typing.

それほどもありません。
時間のほとんど[ほとんどの時間]をタイプして過ごしてますから。

A: That's too bad. Won't the editor let you cover any stories?

それは残念ですね。
編集長はあなたに記事の取材をさせてくれないのでしょうか[のですか]?

B: Sure. But there aren't any stories to cover. Nothing ever happens.

Nothing ever : この場合の ever は never と同じ意味
もちろんさせてくれます。でも、取材する(べき)記事が全然ないんです。
何も全く起こらないのでね。


Guide 2

A: I hear you've got a new job. Where are you working?

新しい仕事に就いたと聞いています[→ 就いたそうですね]。
どこに勤めているのですか?

B: For a bakery.

For a bakery. = I'm working for a bakery. (パン屋に勤めてます)
パン屋です。

A: I imagine that's not very interesting.

それはあまり面白くないと思います[→ 面白くなさそうですね]。

B: It is, though. You see, I'm a salesperson.

though = however [副] でも、けれども (接続詞ではない)
ところが面白いんですよ。
私は販売員なんです[→ 販売を担当してるんです]。

A: I see. And you meet a lot of interesting people?

なるほど。大勢の興味深い人に会うわけですね。

B: Once in a while. Well, I better be going. I have to be to work in ten minutes.

have to be to work : 仕事場[職場]に到着していなければならない
in ten minutes : 10分したら、10分後には
時にはね。さて、もう行かなくては。
10分後には仕事に入らないといけないので。

A: Go right ahead. I'll see you this evening.

どうぞ。今晩会いましょう。


Guide 3

A: Working for a newspaper must be a fascinating job.

新聞社に勤めるのは魅力的な仕事に違いありません[→ さぞ魅力的な仕事でしょうね]。

B: Yes. Most people think reporters spend most of their time doing interesting things.

はい。たいていの人は新聞記者は時間のほとんどを面白いことをして過ごしていると思っています。

A: Well, don't they?

そうじゃないのですか?

B: No. Actually they lead rather routine lives.

はい。実は新聞記者はかなりありふれたお決まりの生活を送っているんです。

A: What do you mean?

どういう意味ですか?

B: Well, the average reporter spends most of his day at his desk.

平均的な記者は一日の大半を机で過ごしています。

A: Don't they go out and cover stories?

外に出かけて記事の取材をしないのですか?

B: Occasionally. But I think they spend most of their time typing.

時々はね。でも時間のほとんどをタイプして過ごしていると思います。


Guide 4

A: Where do you work?

どこに勤めているのですか?

B: At a department store.

At a department store. : I work at a department store. (デパートに勤めてます)
デパートです。

~に勤めている : work for [at] ~ / be working for [at] ~>

A: Which one?

どちらの[どこの]デパートですか?

B: The Isemaru Department Store.

伊勢丸デパートです。

A: I've never heard of it. Where's it located?

hear of ~ = hear about ~ : ~のことを[について]聞く
be located : 位置させられている → 位置している、置かれている → ある
そんな名前のデパートは聞いたことがありません。どこにあるのですか?

B: In Kami-machi. Near the station.

上町です。駅の近くです。

A: How long does it take to get there.

そこに着くのに[そこへ行くのに]どれくらい(時間)がかかりますか?

B: It takes about twenty minutes from my home.

私の家から約20分かかります。
