1. be referred to as ～ ： ～だと言われる 呼ばれる
a. Mr. Brown is often referred to as the friendliest man in the neighborhood.
a. ブラウンさんは近所で一番親しみやすい[感じがいい]人だとよく言われる。
b. Tokyo is sometimes referred to as the Gateway to the Orient.
b. 東京は東洋の玄関[入り口]だと時々呼ばれます。
2. await ～ ＝ wait for ～ ： ～を待つ
a. All kinds of danger awaited the travelers through the dark night.
a. through(out) ～ ＝ (all) through ～ ： ～の至る所で[に]、～じゅうで[に]
a. 闇夜の至る所であらゆる種類の危険が旅人たちを待ち構えた。
b. We waited for the train for three hours.
b. 私たちは3時間列車を待った。
3. look forward to ～ ： ～を楽しみにする 楽しみに待つ
3. look forward to Ving ： Vするのを楽しみにする、楽しみに待つ
3. (通例、進行形で使う)
a. We were all looking forward to a week in the mountains.
a. 私たちはみんな山で過ごす1週間を楽しみにしていた。
b. The students were looking forward to summer vacation.
b. 生徒たちは夏休みを楽しみにしていた。
c. I'm looking forward to a visit from my best friend.
c. 私は親友の訪問を楽しみに待っています。
4. ought to V ： 1. (当然) Vすべきだ、Vしたほうがいい
4. ought to V ： 2. (当然) Vする[である]はずだ、はずなのに
a. You ought to try corresponding by computer.
a. try Ving / try to V ： Vすることを試す → Vしてみる / Vしようと(努力)する
a. 君はコンピューターで文通してみるべきです[したほうがいい]。
b. Jimmy ought to be here by now.
b. by now ： 今[現在]までに(は) → 今頃は
b. ジミーは今頃はここに到着しているはずなのだが。
c. We ought to reach Chicago by six o'clock.(will probably reach)
c. 私たちは6時までにはシカゴに到着するはずです。
5. would rather V1 than V2 ： V2するよりはむしろV1したい
5. would rather V ： (どちらかと言えば)Vしたい
5. would rather not V ： (どちらかと言えば)Vしたくない
a. I'd rather have a cup of good Japanese tea.
a. (どちらかと言えば)おいしい日本茶のほうをいただきたいのですが。
b. The boys said they'd rather not invest any money in a second-hand car.
b. invest Ｏ in ～ ： ～にＯを使う、投資する
b. 少年たちは中古の車にお金を使いたくない[使うのはいやだ]と言った。
c. I'd rather be free than wealthy. (than の後の be は省略)
c. 裕福であるよりはむしろ自由でありたい。
6. look ～ ： ～に見える
a. You look very beautiful in your new evening gown.
a. in ～ ： ＝wearing ～ ～を着ると、着て
a. 君は新しいイブニングドレス着るととても美しく見える。
b. That movie star looks older than I expected.
b. あの映画スターは予期した[思った]より老けて見える。
c. You look frightened.
c. 君は怖がっているように見える。
d. The children looked tired.
d. 子供たちは疲れているように見えた。
