Lesson 2

The Pen is mightier than the Sword

Section 2. Application Dialogue

A: I hear you're corresponding with a friend in India. Do you write letters to her often?

B: No. I don't write letters to her. You see, we correspond by e-mail.

A: E-mail! That should be interesting.

B: It is. We also send photographs and short videos by the Internet. My family and friends gather around the computer and we watch her videos.

A: I see. It's something like watching TV, isn't it?

B: Yes. You'd be surprised how interesting her pictures and videos are.

A: I don't imagine she understands your e-mail very well, though. People in India don't speak English, do they?

I don't inagine (that) ・・・ = I don't think (that) ・・・ : ・・・ではないと思う (通例、that ・・・を否定して訳す)

B: Sure they do. In the large cities English has almost become a second language. In fact English is India's official language.

Sure they do = Sure they speak English do代動詞

A: I didn't know that. But what do you talk about in your e-mail?

B: Oh, many things. I tell her what I've been doing and ask her about India and her way of life.

A: That's a good way to get to understand other people, isn't it?

get to V : (1) Vするようになる =come to V (2) Vできる

B: Yes, and she gets to understand about life in Japan, too.

A: That sounds so interesting that I'd like to try it myself.

B: If you'd like to come over, we can make and send a video to her together.

A: Do you think it would turn out all right?

turn out all right : うまくいく =turn out fine

B: Sure, and besides, it'll be a lot of fun.

fun名詞なので very fun不可great fun quite fun much fun なら

A: All right. I'll be over tonight.

B: Fine. I'll be waiting for you.
